We ground our Flirt filter coffee blend and put 13 grams into steeped coffee bags. They look like tea bags, but their special material allows for maximum coffee extraction without too much sediment getting into the cup. The bags are individually wrapped in paper sachets equipped with aluminum foil and flushed with nitrogen when filling, which guarantees freshness for several months.
The steeped coffee bags are used exactly the same as classic tea bags - you put them in a cup, pour 250 ml of boiling water and let it steep for 5 minutes. The result is coffee indistinguishable from that from an Aeropress or V60. You don't have to worry about the coarseness of the grind, the weight of the coffee and you don't need any coffee equipment at all. So ideal for traveling, weekend cottage, camping ...
How does it taste?
You won't recognize it from the classic Flirt beans, because it's just the same coffee, only in a different package! It's balanced, you won't feel any extremes in the taste. You don't have to think about this coffee, you just pour it and enjoy drinking it It has a creamy body, honey and chocolate sweetness, with subtle notes of dried apricots.
Current blend
Flirt currently consists of two coffees. A light and floral coffee from the Ethiopian Bule Hora processing station and a sweet Costa Rican coffee from the Macho farm.
50% Ethiopia Bule Hora - heirloom - fully washed
50% Costa Rica Macho - catuaí - fully washed
Ethiopia Bule Hora
The processing plant is located in the Guji region, near the town of Bule Hora, formerly called Hagere Mariam. The station buys and processes cherries from small growers in the area, invests money back into the community and supports a local school. Producers supplying cherries are eligible for training on composting, pruning and mulching coffee trees to improve quality and yield on their farms. Due to the high altitude, it is quite cold here, so the ripening of the cherries, fermentation and drying takes place very slowly.
We buy coffee from the Bule Hora station through our long-time partner in Ethiopia, Ms. Heleana Georgalis, who also provides the final processing at her Moplaco dry mill in the capital city of Addis Ababa. This year's coffee export from Ethiopia was significantly hampered by the crisis in the Suez Canal, which caused a delay of several months for our container. We are all the more pleased that this Ethiopian coffee arrived in excellent condition.
Costa Rica Macho
We have been selecting coffees from Efraín “Macho” Naranjo and his son Kevin for over a decade. We have several different lots from them every year. This year, we selected a larger lot of the popular catuaí variety directly for Flirt. It was processed using fully washed method with the so-called "reposado" of cherries. After collection, cherries are left to "rest" in plastic crates in the shade for about 48 hours before pulping in Penagos Eco-pulpers. This kick-starting of fermentation helps the complexity of flavors and acidity in the cup.
Efraín and Kevin are among the producers who are constantly innovating. They recently boasted shaded two-tiered African beds and parchment storage in a double Grainpro bags. Slower drying has a huge effect on the rate of aging of the coffee, which is absolutely essential for the roaster. That is why we duly acknowledge all similar initiatives on the part of the producers and are happy to pay extra for such coffees.
